An Army Air Corps P-51 Mustang pilot, ecstatic upon returning to Iwo Jima from a VLR Very Long Range mission over Mainland Japan does a low altitude high speed pass down the beach before climbing to enter the traffic pattern for landing. These VLR missions were usually up to 1500 miles in length and could last up to eight hours.
